Story
Earlier this year, my Mum, Carol Bills, was diagnosed with cancer. She had been undergoing treatment ever since, but on July 14 our worst fears were realised when her doctors informed us that the treatment has been ineffective and her disease was terminal. Mum lost her battle with cancer on August 23. She was the bravest and most inspirational person I know, and absolutely my hero. In dedication to her, I am running a half marathon on October 28.
Mum requested that I raise awareness and funds for the support group for a little known disease that has had a huge impact on our family. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) has been responsible for the loss of my aunt Lynne, and more recently my cousin Matthew. His sister, my cousin Sarah Bills also suffers with the same condition.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a genetic connective tissue condition characterised by skin extensibility, joint hypermobility and tissue fragility. Sarah is, and Lynne and Matthew were affected by the Vascular classification of the disease.
All funds raised from my half marathon will be donated to Ehlers-Danlos Support UK. Please take the time to visit the charity’s website and read a little more about the disease: http://www.ehlers-danlos.org, and then make a donation!
