Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Hugh Wardrop is my dad and he has Dementia.
He was diagnosed a few years ago, we never really noticed. He became a bit more forgetful, asked you the same question several times in the same visit. I'd have my answers ready...'The car is going fine' 'it's done thirty thousand miles now'. I thought he was just getting old. I wish I was more patient then.
Around Christmas time he took a dip. Didn't recognise his own house, wanted to go 'home' and feared for his safety. He can lose anything from 20 to 40 years during a conversation. I took him to see his grandson play football recently and he insisted on paying and asked for a pensioner ticket and 'one for his boy'. I'm 48!!
My dad has always provided. He worked 16 hour shifts, seven days a week, when we were young so that he could put food on the table. He became a successful businessman and employed over 100 people. He liked to keep his hand in, driving skip motors and artics. Nobody was as good as him at blind side reversing. He doesn't drive anymore.
There are times now when he needs help to put on his shoes or even sit down. Sometimes he is not to keen on having any visitors. I can handle that, I know that he loves me.
My dad has a disease that affects 86,000 people in Scotland. I am fundraising for Alzheimers Scotland by cycling from Glasgow to Edinburgh in the Pedal for Scotland event on September 8th 2013.
My dad is a colossus of a man
