Story
The Hospice of St Francis, since 1979,provides specialist care to people affected by life-limiting illness in West Hertfordshire. ALL THEIR SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE. They provide care to patients, families&carers wherever needed-in the hospice,at home,in hospital and they rely on the generosity of the community for over 80% of the funds they need.People are referred from GP's,hospitals, care nurses.People can be admitted for many reasons - on average for about 10days at a time eg:
* to attend to difficult symptoms, when not enough care is given at home, when patients want to keep their illness from their home setting
* many choose to spend their final days in a hospice and also when the family is exhausted with providing care..they need to re-energise before taking back the role of being carers again.
MOIRA THORPE - John THORPEs SISTER
Moira was born with Cystic Fibrosis which is a lung disease. Even with breathing problems Moira never let this hold her back. If she wanted to do something she was very determined that she was going to do it. Moira had been in and out of Londons Brompton Hospital with her condition and put up an extremely brave fight even til the very end and we are all very proud of her and glad she was part of our lives and family. Just after her 50th birthday in October 2008 Moiras health began to rapidly deteriorate. She was on a breathing machine for 24hrs a day fighting for breath.
After spending four months in Londons Brompton hospital, just before Christmas 2008, Moira was transferred to the Hospice of St Francis by her own decision. Before moira was transferred to the hospice she was worried that it was a place where old people go to die so she asked her son to go to the hospice and let her know what they thought. He told her "You'll love it". She was also told she would have her own room, patio and view of the gardens. Moira did like it there and was visited daily by her family and devoted parents.
Sadly Moira died on New Years Day 2009 with her family by her side after having had enough of battling for breath. She was extremely brave and loved by so many. Moiras stay at the hospice has resulted in the hospice team receiving training sessions from the Brompton - teaching them more about Cystic Fibrosis. The hospice proved to be invaluable to both Moira and her family and hopefully will continue to do so for many other patients and families.
