I've been working with a researcher Dr Arianna Ferrini who is an expert in stem cell and gene therapy and we believe it has potential to make a great difference to the lives of people suffering from Menieres Disease. Menieres Disease is a life changing illness and greatly impacts quality of life. 

Symptoms are severe, disruptive and damaging to mental health. Vertigo attacks with vomiting, drop attacks, tinnitus (continues ringing in the ears), dizziness, fatigue, aural fullness, sensitivity to light, movement and visual auras. During the course of the disease people suffer progressive hearing loss and in many cases it results in complete deafness in the effected ear. It's been estimated that around 40% will develop the disease in both ears and can eventually go completely deaf. Balance can also be permanently impacted with some sufferers requiring walking aids to move around.

Menieres Disease lacks a specific diagnostic criteria and hence goes undiagnosed in many sufferers. Hence the numbers of people suffering from Menieres Disease is far larger than health statistics might show. The perception is also that it is an old persons disease however it impacts many young people and it is a life long illness as there is no cure.   

In the short term we need research to show that mesenchymal stem cell treatment can modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation and alleviate further symptoms. 

Longer term we need research to investigate how induced pluripotent stem cell treatment can recreate in the laboratory the dysfunctioning cells and understand the underlying molecular mechanisms. These stem cells could then be used to regenerate the inner ear tissue and ultimately restore hearing and balance to those impacted.
