Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My son Tom and I are doing a sponsored walk from Cwmcarn Scenic Drive to the Royal Gwent Hospital on Sunday 24th June to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU).

Tom, and his twin brother Jack, were born 11 weeks prematurely and immediately after their birth they were taken to SCBU. Both babies weighed 3lbs 4ozs and although Jack was initially the stronger twin he only survived for 9 days.

Tom had a number of setbacks and remained in SCBU for 7 weeks before being discharged, weighing just under 5lbs.

I visited SCBU for hours every day for 7 weeks so saw first hand just how hard everyone worked, carrying out a very difficult but rewarding job. I will be eternally grateful to Dr's Ferguson, Maguire and Buss and all the nursing and auxiliary staff for all their care and dedication, not only for everything they did for Tom and Jack but also for the support they gave me during the most worrying and emotional time of my life.

We have recently celebrated Tom's 18th birthday, but also wanted to do something in memory of Jack. I came up with the idea of doing a sponsored walk on the 18th anniversary of his death to raise money for SCBU. Jack's ashes were scattered at the top of Cwmcarn Scenic Drive (with my Dad's) so the obvious route to walk was from there to the R.G.H.

Many babies benefit from the superb care provided by SCBU but just like all NHS departments their budget is limited so any additional funds raised is much appreciated and put to very good use.

Tom and I will be grateful for any sponsorship received and donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

With our best wishes, Jo and Tom xx
