On March 6th 2014, I will be trekking up Kilimanjaro to raise money for a fantastic charity that has supported me and my family. Children as young as five can become carers. Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse.Young Carers often go without support or recognition. The Carers Trust provides access to desperately-needed breaks, information and advice, education, training and employment opportunities. Without their support I or my siblings wouldn’t be where we are today.
Campaigning for change and Young Carers’ rights has always been something close to my heart. I became a young carer myself at the age of 9 after my Mum suddenly became ill after having my younger brother Joshua. My life changed overnight.
My journey as young carer although at times a struggle has made me the person I am today. I am lucky enough to have made it to Cardiff University despite the odds and have a bright future ahead of me. I want to make sure other young carers have the support and opportunities that every young person deserves. Education and support from young carers’ charities allowed me to be more than just a ‘Carer’.
Please give generously. This will be the first time in my life I have had the opportunity to do something like this. I will be doing it to raise awareness and raise vital funds for young carers.
Thank you for your support
