This is a Just Giving page set up in memory of our much loved mum and grandma Joan Griffith.

As a family, we have chosen to donate money raised to Medcare, a charity which was close to my grandmas heart and one she was incredibly passionate about.

Medcare is a UK registered charity, based in Frodsham; providing health and social care for sick, vulnerable, marginalised children, living well below the poverty line, in rural Uganda.  Medcare has been responsible for the funding and development of the Wellspring Children’s Medical Centre, where each year 20,000 children come for assistance, with nearly half a million children in the catchment area served by Wellspring. Medcare also has a Child Sponsorship Scheme which provides free health care, including hospital admissions and laboratory costs, a medically approved diet, transport costs from their homes to clinics, mosquito nets, shoes, clothing and counselling. Presently Medcare has 182 children on the scheme suffering from various illnesses such as AIDS, Sickle Cell Disease, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus and amputees. They have a further 50 children waiting for sponsors. Medcare have proved over the past 11 years that sponsorship saves and transforms lives.

Every month my grandma sponsored a child called Flavia Nakalyango. Joan started sponsoring Flavia in December 2013. Flavia suffers from AIDS, having been born HIV+ve . She lives with her grandmother and 7 other children in extreme poverty. The whereabouts of her parents is unknown. Due to her sponsorship Flavia has grown up into a healthy, happy 16 year old. She has recently stopped school and is waiting for funds to enable her to take up vocational training. Then at the age of 18 she will be equipped to begin her adult life with good health and a job to help her in the future. The sponsorship of my grandma and her friends has certainly saved and transformed Flavia’s life.

Flavia aspires to be a hairdresser and the money raised will go towards her training as well as food and medical costs during her training. 

We would kindly ask that instead of buying flowers for Joans funeral, donations are made to Medcare to carry on this positive and loving contribute made to both Medcare and Flavia.

We would like to continue doing something positive during this incredibly sad time.
