Story
I'm self funding this trip so all proceeds will go direct to St Johns Hospice.
My husband became very poorly very quickly from the day he was diagnosed and he didn't have it easy at all. He caught infection after infection, which meant having to have a few absolutely awful stints in hospital, he even checked himself out a couple of times which scared the crap out of me as he was banging on the front door at half 1 in the morning waiting to be let in carrying a bag of pills that Pablo Escobar would have been proud off!
A decision came where he would be better at home in the comfort of our bed & I would manage his medication unfortunately the meds weren't touching the excruciating pain he was in so a decision was made to try a syringe driver to try to control it a bit better, this meant daily home visits from the SJH home team, they were amazing & provided such great care & always arrived with a smile even when Paul was being understandably but particularly grumpy some days!!!! And even when we had to call them out in the middle of the night they arrived promptly & were still in high spirits! Unfortunately the pain continued & it was just awful seeing him experience this.
The decision was made that Paul would go in the Hospice to see if they could attempt to control the pain with different doses. All the staff & I mean all the staff from receptionists, cleaners, caters, volunteers & not forgetting the marvellous nurses & doctors all go above & beyond for each patient.
They understood that each patient was different & they spent time with each patient & nothing was too much trouble, they even had time for me. They would sit with Paul & listen to his stories & supplied him with his daily ice cream, which he loved. He had many visitors throughout his 6 weeks in the hospice & they were all made to feel welcome, unfortunately the plan of getting the pain under control & for him to come home never happened. We had 5 months which really wasn't long enough to come to terms with this shitty situation but then its more than some get so we were lucky in that sense & once SJH were involved it made the situation a little easier to cope with.
India was one of the last major holidays Paul & I went on so it's going to be particularly tough going back without him especially when the team visit the Taj but knowing I'll be carrying his memory & I'll be raising vital funds for this amazing place, I know I'll get through it no matter how tough it is! Me, in the wilderness with all those mosquitos, oh dear!, what could possibly go wrong!!!!! If you know you know !!!!
I feel its a small way I can say a big thank you to them all & hopefully make someone else's end of life experience that little bit better by raising vital funds.
St Johns covers a large area & they can only provide this superb care by donations as very little is government funded.
