Even for me this is a hard- to- imagine long run!
The concept is simple I will run from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Millennium Bridge covering 69 miles or thereabouts. Can I do it in under 12hours?
I imagine after the first few hours of running through the countryside of Cumbria and Northumberland East to West my body may questions why?
So what is my motivation behind doing this?
Working as a physiotherapist within the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, I have helped many returning injured soldiers. They are proud individuals, proud to serve our country, putting their lives on the line to help the people of Afghanistan or Iraq to build a strong and stable country.
They know the risks of their job but even so being injured is completing life changing.
Medical intervention, operation after operation, rehabilitation and adjustment goes on and then the decision of what to do with the rest of their life now that their dream job has brought to an end. Many injured individuals can and do pursue a normal, albeit different, life and a few go onto achieve amazing ventures such as walking to the North Pole or completing an Ironman.
However imagine the impossibility of never being able to pursue a normal life again and not even having any physical disabilities to show for it. For example one soldier has contracted Q fever and living with the chronic viral after-effects leaves him unable to have the physical strength to lift a kettle and struggling to brush his teeth let alone support his young family.
While the war in Iraq might have drawn to a close last year, and fighting in Afghanistan may well wrap up as scheduled by 2014, there is no real end for a member of the armed services while they are on active service or who have been injured.
69miles of hard running or the rest of my life dreaming I could run a mile let alone 69 of them- I know which I would prefer.
It is these people I’m running for and asking you to sponsor me please.
