The Voyage of Recovery is a working sailing trip that allows service users and staff the opportunity to try something they may of never of done before.
The voyage challenges on may levels, physically, mentally and emotionally. Participants are expected to carry out the day-to-day functions of sailing a boat this includes everything from hosting the sails, lifting the anchor, cooking, cleaning, navigation, steering, keeping watch and attending the daily meeting. All of this requires team work, good communication and an ability to be tolerant of others.
This year we have a new partner, the first three trips will be on Tectona who will be operated by the Island Trust and the second block of three trips will be run by the Rona Trust.
The voyage facilitates recovery even before clients step on board, it has acted as a mechanism for motivation for many clients as participants need to be abstinent by the time they sail. We have also seen that clients find a great sense of calm and peace whilst on the trips, whilst it still challenges them to push through emotional and physical barriers. We have seen that clients have come off the sailing experience and then go back to volunteer with the sailing providers and in one case secure employment.
The Voyage of Recovery is to set sail again in 2015.
