I’m writing this from the control room of an oil production platform about 90miles due east of Peterhead in the North Sea. It’s called the Kittiwake and for my sins I have the pleasure of working throughout the festive season to enable the UK gas customer a hot oven into which he can stuff the fatted goose. Cheers. Bitter? Me?? Never!

Anyway, there I was having a nice chat with my darling daughter Sandra, about the project into which she was about to embark. In a throwaway remark I happened to say that I could do that and quick as a flash she replied, of course you could. I forgot the basic rule; engage brain before putting mouth in gear. No way out! Cul-de-sac! So here I am doing my utmost to increase my stamina, hitting the gym with a vengeance. No problem keeping off the alcohol you’ll understand.

If Air France and Vietnamese Airlines do their bit for the cause, I’ll be in Hue on February 14 to do mine.
