Jim Graley, 44, and a forces veteran will be completing a workout every hour for 24 hours this October at Earls Barton Recreational Ground to raise money for Scotty’s Little Soldiers – a charity that supports children who have experienced the death a parent who served in the British Armed Forces.
For Jim, this will be a tough challenge, but one he is determined to take on as Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a charity that means a great deal to him.
Founded by war widow Nikki Scott, Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a national charity, which provides support to hundreds of children who have lost a military parent across the UK. The charity was set up in 2010 in memory of Nikki’s husband and father to her two children, Corporal Lee Scott, after he was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.
Talking about what the charity means to him, Jim said, “Being a veteran myself, I know only too well that when a member of the Armed Forces is taken from this world before their time, it is not just losing them that is difficult, it’s seeing the impact on those who are left behind that is truly heart breaking. I was first made aware of Scotty’s from a family member and was instantly pulled in by the fantastic work that they do. I went on to read many case studies of the impact that this has on the children and families, and I felt compelled to do
something to help.”
Jim continued: “I have also been
fascinated by levels of human endurance and I have always wanted to complete a
crazy challenge. This way I achieve one
of my personal goals, but more importantly raise some badly needed funds for
Scotty’s whilst completing it”
Jim’s challenge will take place on the Earls Barton Recreational Ground, not far from the Earls Barton Youth Club, starting on the Friday 29th October at 1100 and finishing on Saturday 30th October at 1100.
The challenge involves completing a workout every hour for 24
hours. Each workout will last for around
40 minutes of each hour and will involve such things as:
- Tyre Flipping
- Sled Pushes
- Farmers Carries
- 5 Km run
The final hour of the challengewill be an hour-long boot camp run by one of the local PT’s, Sally Milner who runs Sally’s Army Boot camps on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Jim said: “I encourage everyone that is able to come and participate in this final hour. All that we ask is that you provide a contribution to the charity; it can be as big or as small as you like. Whatever you give will make life a lot easier for the Scotty’s children.
We will be running some small competitions to raise a bit of
additional cash. The main one being a tyre flipping completion, which will be who can do the most flips in a minute. A small contribution will be required to participate and we will have some small tyres, so that all ages and abilities can have a go. Also, if any of you want to participate in any of the workouts with me, then there will be a
small amount of spaces available.”
Scotty’s Little Soldiers is currently providing assistance to hundreds of bereaved Forces children and young people around the UK and services offered include guidance to parents and carers, access to professional child bereavement support, personal education and learning assistance (including grants) and fun activities such as holiday respite breaks and group events. These are all designed to remind the children and young people supported by Scotty’s that they are not alone.
