Story
Thank you for visiting my Fundraising page. I'd like to tell you something about myself and what I'm fundraising for.
I am coming to the end of my school career and instead of going straight onto university next year, I have decided to go abroad for a year to learn a bit more about the world. I have been selected by the charity Project Trust and so at the end of August I will be travelling to Sihanoukville on the coast of Cambodia. I will be spending 12 months living and working there at Don Bosco School. The school selects students from difficult backgrounds, especially orphans and those from poorer provinces in Cambodia. There are about 500 students attending the school, predominantly boys who study mechanics and electrical engineering. The main aspect of my work will be teaching English, however, I hope to get involved with a wide variety of work at the project. Since some of the students board, there is plenty of scope for setting up extra-curricular activities including sports and music which I hope to take full advantage of. I will be living with one other girl with whom I will share a room in the school grounds.
Project Trust is a registered educational charity, sending school leavers to volunteer working in about 24 different countries. It was set up in 1968 and has since sent over 4000 volunteers between the ages of 17 and 19 to projects across the world. Project Trust is based on the Hebridean Isle of Coll where volunteers are chosen during a demanding 5 day selection course, are trained before leaving and debriefed on their return. During their year out Project Trust aims to provide volunteers with an educational experience by living and working alongside people in the community they live in without taking work from local people.
In order for me to be able to take this amazing opportunity, I need to raise £4,950, much of which I hope to fundraise through different events such as a ceilidh and a sponsored row.
I’m hoping to gain a lot from a year abroad and I know it will be an experience I will never forget. Most of all, I hope to give a lot back to the community in which I will be staying and make a difference in the lives of the people I work with by sharing my limited knowledge and experiences of the world with them and hopefully they will enjoy my time there as much as I know I will.
Any donation, no matter how small would really be greatly appreciated to get me a step closer to my goal.
