Story

On the 28th July 2018, I am going to do a Sky Dive to raise much needed funds and awareness for Norfolk and Waveney's Cancer Charity, ‘The Big C’ ... I feel incredibly lucky to have the chance to be taking part in ‘The Big Jump 2018’ for Big C.

Every day, across the Norfolk and Waveney area around 20 people are told the news they have cancer. In January 2015, my husband Ian was one of those people. Last year, Big C provided support over 23,000 times. That’s an incredible amount of support. This support goes to those affected by cancer and their families. Big C are, in my opinion, a pillar of strength to families that face the turmoil and heartache that comes with a diagnosis of cancer. They help people and their families by offering advice, counselling, information, books for children so they can understand what Mummy or Daddy are going through (for example) and the Big C centres are open if you don’t know where to go or what to do, they will always provide a friendly ear and a cup of tea and listen to you.

Big C pays for ground-breaking world class research into cancer right here in Norfolk and Waveney, at the UEA and the Norwich Research Park as well as local hospitals. Big C funds projects into many different aspects of cancer, both prevention and treatment, which is incredible. Since 1980, Big C have gone from strength to strength with their research and support to people across the local region and every penny you donate helps them in their mission just that little bit more.

I choose to support and give back to Big C because on 20th July 2016, I lost my husband, Ian Harper, to Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. From his diagnosis in 2015 until Ian’s last days and even after his passing, the Big C are there to support unconditionally. From your sponsorship, Big C can continue to progress with research and their support to people all over Norfolk and Waveney. Not only was Ian my husband, he was also the best Daddy in the world to our little boy. Our son was only 7 when his Daddy died. Our family has been crushed since Ian’s passing and no family should have to endure this heartache alone.

Ian noted, before he died, that life was more enjoyable if you get up and have fun, he knew only too well after a terminal diagnosis that life was too short. He was only 47 when he passed away. So with his words etched in my head and my heart, I am willing to take on the sky dive and raise as much as I can for Big C. Life is about pushing yourself... going outside your comfort zone and doing things you've never done before. I’m excited, nervous, but happy to be taking an opportunity to do something amazing for Big C.
