I am taking part in the London2Brighton Challenge in May in order to raise money for North London Cares.
NLC is a community network of young professionals and older neighbours hanging out with one another in a rapidly changing city. It's a group of friends who live and work in the same areas in Camden and Islington, brought together by proximity but bound by so much more: shared time, laughter, new experiences and friendship. Some of the participants are older neighbours - people in their 70s, 80s and 90s who have deep roots in the community, but often few connections. 67% live alone; most want to keep in touch with the rapidly changing city around them. Other participants are young professionals - graduates recently arrived in London, trying to find their way.
This charity has touched my heart because of the simple joy they bring to older people with often simple things such as cinema clubs with younger people or cookery classes. It's important because no one should ever feel lonely and the strange thing is that sometimes London tends to be one of the loneliest cities in the world for both young and old.
Last year I participated in the London2Cambridge challenge but only half of it - a mere 50km and so this year I wanted to step it up a gear and see just how far I can push myself.
The London2Brighton Challenge is advertised as one of the UK's greatest endurance challenges and along with 3000 other people I will be walking/jogging/running 100km (about 62 miles) within 24 hours. The route will take me from city to coast across 100km of paths and trails, the North Downs, the South Downs and some wonderful Sussex countryside before the coastline comes into view and we reach the finish line at Brighton racecourse.
I would love to raise at least 395 pounds before the event but need to raise 50% of that (197 pounds) by April 13th so please, if this sounds like something you would like to support, donate anything that you can - every little helps and would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please visit https://northlondoncares.org.uk for more information.
