Story

This July Gemma and I have decided to run the British 10k. We will be raising money for a very worthy cause – League of Friends of Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre.

A close friend of mine, Jess, suffers from a condition called antiphospholipid. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), also known as Hughes syndrome, is a disorder of the immune system that causes an increased risk of blood clots and miscarriages. She also suffers from intracranial hypertension (IH). IIH is the general term for the neurological disorders in which cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the skull is too high.

There is currently no cure for either condition.

Due to these conditions Jess has spent 16 of the last 18 months in hospital, Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre. In this time she has had 12 operations and been in intensive twice due to a blood clot on the brain and a brain hemorrhage. She has also had to endure 25 lumbar punctures.  Jess had to spend Christmas 2011 in hospital and last year was discharged just in time to spend Christmas day at home. On top of this…. every time Jess stayed in hospital AFC Wimbledon lost meaning they are now battling to avoid relegation!

This has been a very difficult time for Jess and her family. However, the staff at Hurstwood Park has been excellent making her stays as bearable as possible. The treatment she has received has been superb and has quite literally saved her life.

League of friends of Hurstwood Park Neurological centre is charitable trust. Their primary concern is highlighting the good work of the centre and ensuring all monies raised go directly towards purchasing equipment for the hospital which directly benefits the patients.
