We provide people with free hospice care to enable the terminally ill to die at home

Story

Jem was diagnosed with bowel cancer in August 2019 after putting up with "dodgy innards" for years (DO YOUR POO STICK TEST!!) He underwent 2 courses of radio and chemotherapy and had his bowel removed in September 2020. Unfortunately, from that point onwards, he crashed into every complication imaginable (and some too horrible to imagine) and was in hospital for all but 12 days. On 7th December he came home having been told he had days to live.

Jem and I wanted him to be able to spend his last days at home and die in his own bed - the Lawrence Home Nursing Team enabled him to do just that. Jem's final days were full of pain, but the nurses gave such gentle, respectful care, and managed his pain relief so that he was able to die peacefully and with dignity. The care they provided for me as I lay with Jem leading up to his death was wonderful. They gave me space and time with him for as long as I needed (not quite - I needed another 40 years with him) and helped me say goodbye to my soulmate and best friend.
