Story

Hello and thanks for visiting my page. Please take a minute to read about why I am doing this and where your money will go, should you choose to donate.

The charity I will be raising money for is the Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare (S.O.P.W). Now please note, this charity only helps political prisoners, so understand no money will be going to any Southall drug dealers banged up in Scrubs. They have enough money already.

Seriously though, under the corrupt law of India many minorities suffer at the mercy of ruthless and unethical police forces. Since the mid 80s thousands of Sikh men have disappeared following arrest, whilst many more have been locked away on phony charges and imprisoned for years without due process. Human rights are regularly violated and SOPW were started to stop this.

Examples include; the killing of Jaspal Singh, a 17 year old student shot when police opened fire on an unarmed crowd making a peaceful protest just last year - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLEu7bSxlcg.

A more prominent example is the case of Professor Devinder Singh Bhullar. A college lecturer, Professor Bhullar became involved in Sikh activism after seeing several of his students and even his own father disappear following arrest. Arrested in 1993 having been linked on minimal evidence to a car bomb, Professor Bhullar has spent 20 years in jail based upon a confession which was neither signed nor hand written by him. Professor Bhullar was even given the death sentence which led to global protests from Sikhs. Even though Professor Bhullar has been declared mentally unfit the Indian government are still looking to execute him, having only stopped after protests the world over.

For more information on human rights abuses please see the following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_Punjab,_India

Any money given here will go to ensuring prisoners of this kind can get fair and due process under Indian law. Not only will lawyers fight phony charges, they ensure prisoner's human rights are being met by being provided with basics, such as regular showers, toothbrushes, meals and keeping check on their general health, as many are victims of police torture.

Money also goes to aid the families of these prisoners to help with things like visiting their loved ones in jail and helping them simply get by in the absence of what is often the breadwinner of the family.

If you think this is a just cause or even if you just want to see me jump out of a plane, please, please donate. Any donation is appreciated. The money goes a long, long way.

Thank you all.
