Story

As many of you will know my husband Malcolm was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (AMSAN Variant) in October 2020 and was admitted to hospital totally paralysed from the shoulders down. As I feel totally helpless and cannot visit him in hospital at the present time I thought I could do some good by signing up to do a Virtual event to raise funds for this amazing charity who provide so much help for sufferers and their families.

I have registered to do the Lands End to JohnO'Groats  challenge and plan to run the 874 miles - luckily I have a year to complete the challenge.

Thank you so much to everyone for your donations. I am overwhelmed by all the kindness and messages of support. As my donations have almost reached 200% I feel I have to do another 874 miles so have now signed up to do the return journey and do John O’Groats to Lands End although this time I will also count my walking as well as the running . As I am now doing 1748 miles I have raised my target to £1748 (£1 per mile) Thank you all so much for the support xx

GAIN is the only national organisation in the UK and Republic of Ireland dedicated to helping people affected by these conditions. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition affecting the peripheral nervous system, usually leading to temporary or long-term paralysis. Around 80% of those with GBS will make a good recovery, but between 5-10% of people will not survive and the other 10-15% may be left with severe mobility or dexterity issues. Chronic variants such as AMSAN are similar but longer-lasting. GAIN helps people understand and manage acute and chronic variants of the syndrome, raises awareness, and promotes clinical and non-clinical research into these conditions. This is an expensive commitment and we rely solely on voluntary donations, people organising and taking part in events to raise funds for the charity, and income from legacies. For every £1 we receive, over 91p is spent on fulfilling our charitable objectives.
