Early detection is so important
Oesophageal cancers are classically detected as advanced tumours and as such have a poor prognosis. It is now the fourth highest cancer killer in the UK. The most common symptom of oesophageal cancer is a problem swallowing (called dysphagia). It can feel like the food is stuck in the throat or chest, and can even cause someone to choke on their food. This is often mild when it starts. To help pass food through the oesophagus, the body makes more saliva. This causes some people to complain of bringing up lots of thick mucus or saliva (spit).
