Story
My name is Jane Okafor and I am a polio survivor. My mother gave me the Oral vaccine prevent polio but it was a touch too late and I did get polio in left leg. For the first 2 years of my life I could not walk and spent quite a few years wearing an iron shoe with a caliper. I was made fun of by other children. My parents spent months going from one hospital to the other and would not accept that I would not walk again and did not allow me to be treated any different than other kids. I had the opportunity to prove people wrong that having polio does not mean life should stop. With the support of my family I rose above the polio stereotype and made a life for myself that I am proud of. I am a wife, I am a mother, I am a journalist, and I am a Personal Trainer and I WANT TO GIVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO CHILDREN WITH POLIO.
My co-runner is Ronke Cambier and sincerely believes that every child should be given an opportunity to make something of their life and should not be labeled because of any disabilities that they have and She hopes to make a big difference by supporting Polio Children.
We are running to support the amazing work of POLIO CHILDREN CHARITY for "The Magbenteh Polio Camp, Makeni, in Bombali District". This is a residency in Sierra Leone where polio survivors live with their families. The 250 polio sufferers (185 adults and 65 children) face prejudice from the community of the town and are sometimes harassed because of their disability. In addition to being marginalized, they receive no financial support from the government and depend solely on selling goods they make in their workshop. We are raising funds to support their sports project, which will allow for polio sufferers to integrate into the general community. Ultimately, through the medium of sports the project will bridge the divide and make it less likely that people with polio disabilities be ostracised from the town community. After alleviating the social stigma and mis-understanding attached to polio, the children affected with polio can be integrated into mainstream schools and thus be given a fighting chance to better their lives.
It would be great if you could donate and share my Page so I can raise as much as possible to help them rehabilitate poor disabled children to mainstream society.
