Story
At the beginning of September, Ian and I will be setting off for an
adventure of a lifetime on a 4 month drive from Tanzania to South
Africa. Prior to our trip we are aiming
to raise money for Ripple Africa, a charity that works in Malawi to provide a
hand up not a hand out across numerous environmental, educational and
healthcare initiatives.
As part of our trip we are aiming to visit Ripple Africa in Malawi to see first-hand some of the amazing projects that they are involved in.
In particular, we are hoping to be able
to raise enough money to buy materials for 20 Changu Changu Moto Fuel Efficient
Stoves. These stoves are helping to improve
health and tackle deforestation in Malawi.
The use of one of these stoves can result in a saving of over 100
bundles of wood per year and the project has already resulted in 80,000 fewer bundles of firewood being needed every
week. In addition, the impact on the health of
families is huge as it reduces smoke inhalation and helps prevents serious
injuries from burns from the use of traditional wood fires as it is common for women’s long skirts to catch fire
or children to fall into the traditional fires. Ian and I will be cooking on open wood fires
for much of our trip so we are acutely aware of how inefficient and potentially
dangerous this type of cooking can be, which is why we keen to be able to
support this project.
