This all started when I boasted to the Dean that my lungs were 50% bigger than average for my age and height. I have regretted that boast ever since! I have been training for the last month on a racing bike kindly lent to me by one of our Porters. Taking it for a spin around the block the first time was like being given the keys to a Ferrari, very scary! If I make it up the first hill it will be a miracle, training in Cambridge is not exactly the best preparation for tackling the Chilterns. I have been the support van driver on many occasions for this ride so do have some idea of what lies ahead and have to admit to a degree of trepidation. Apparently an electric bike would be cheating so will just have to practice on the Gog Magogs and pray for a cool dry windless day. If I can just get my cadence right (this is a cycling term, I am now in theory an expert) I will fly up those hills, if not I will crash and burn. I have from dawn until dusk to achieve this and I am not planning on giving up, even if I have to come in last and at midnight!!!! As most people who know me will be aware I had a pretty serious bout of pneumonia last year so if I complete this challenge I will be really proud of myself.
