Story
On the 16th of April 2016 a huge earthquake has struck Ecuador, killing more than 400 people and injuring over 2,500. Around 150,000 children have been affected and are in danger. Thousands of children are injured and at risk. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was felt by more than 15million people across the region.
Homes, schools, health centres and water systems have been destroyed or damaged. Reports include children being pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings. Half the country is without power. The Government of Ecuador declared a national emergency and has requested assistance.
It is clear that the damage caused by this earthquake requires fast and comprehensive emergency action to keep children safe. Unicef is poised to help children with health care, nutrition, clean water, child protection and education and emergency supplies are already beginning to reach children and families.
On the 25th of July 2016 I will take my bike to Quito, Ecuador where I will start my 11,000km ride to Ushuaia, Argentina passing through Peru, Bolivia and Chile.
I will be accompanied by around 30 other cyclists organised by Bike Dreams
