Story
Almost two years ago we lost our wonderful dad to oesophageal cancer, and our uncle is battling the disease at the moment. We want to make more people aware of this common cancer that doesn't get much attention as well as raise a bit of cash for more research. We would be so grateful if you could spare a few pounds to sponsor us as we run 13.1 miles around Stevenage on 6 November.
Early warning signs, such as persistent heartburn are often ignored or thought just minor ailments, but as the name of the charity we've been supporting, Heartburn Cancer UK, suggests, this should be checked out as it may be a precursor to this cancer.
For most people, oesophageal cancer is found at a late stage and requires major surgery (dad was in intensive care for a week afterwards) along with chemo. If we were aware of the link between heartburn and this cancer, it might have made a difference.
We will obviously think of and miss dad as we run round, past lots of places with a memory of us growing up together in Stevenage with him.
