Story
1000 kms 18 mountains 7 days 1 pair of legs
*Gulp*
This June I will be joining a group of riders called the Fireflies, who will be cycling over the French Alps from Geneva to Cannes in just 7 days. This mammoth route takes in some of the toughest roads to cycle in the world, all for the charity Bloodwise. Bloodwise is committed to beating blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and all the money raised will go towards innovative research and trials in London’s Hammersmith Hospital.
The motto of the Fireflies is ‘For those who suffer, we ride’. We ride for all those who are unable to, for those who don’t know what tomorrow may hold and for those who suffer day-in day-out in their battle against cancer.
During the ride, we will climb over 25,500 meters, almost 3 times the height of an airliner, and spend a majority of our time awake each day in the saddle. It is no easy feat, and I am honoured that this year I have the opportunity to help continue the amazing work that the Fireflies and Bloodwise do.
1 out of 2 people who are currently under the age of 50 will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime, but due to causes such as this the survival rates from these cancers will increase.
I, and no doubt you as well have been affected closely by cancer, it has an overwhelming scope and undiscriminating reach, and so I ask you to give what you can to Bloodwise. I will be extremely grateful for every penny, and know that those who the research touches will be also.
