Fundraising for Cardiac Risk in the Young
Story
This is the 6th Annual #TC5 Memorial Cup in honour of our late team mate and friend, Tony Campbell; which occurs just 2 days after his 35th birthday. Tony was a very popular member of the club and community, a no nonsense footballer and well-known wind-up merchant!!
Since Tony passed away at the age of 29 in 2017, two other former players have suffered similar cardiac conditions. In 2020, gentleman Marc Prendergast sadly passed away after being admitted to hospital, whilst Brendan Dorrian miraculously survived after collapsing and being resuscitated thanks to a pitch-side Defib. All 3, despite being superfit and healthy, suffered from underlying and undetected heart conditions.
- 1 in 300 people have a potentially life threatening heart condition.
- 12 fit and healthy under 35’s die in the uk every week from undiagnosed heart conditions.
- 80% have no prior symptoms.
Despite the alarming death-rate and shocking statistics, the NHS will only offer screening if you have symptoms, family history of cardiac abnormalities or a young sudden death in the family. That is often too late. CRY offer (and promote) widespread free screening for all young people. We have witnessed the devastating impact of young sudden death syndrome, we want to make sure you don’t. Please help us to support CRY’s mission:
