Story
Hi Guys
Mens Health 10K – Bellahouston Park, Glasgow – Sunday 19th June 2011
Well here we go again, this being the anniversary of my 1st ever 10K run. I remember it being a blistering hot day last year so hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this year.
I have decided, on this occasion to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK.
My brother-in-law, Hamish Beaton, at the age of only 60, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in the summer of 2010. As you can imagine, it was an enormous shock to deal with, both for him and also for his wife, Pamela, and son, Alasdhair.
He went through a major operation to remove the tumour, together with part of his bowel in October 2010, and this ultimately saved his life. If he had left going to seeing the doctor any longer… well who knows what might have been the outcome. He had a colostomy bag fitted while the wound repaired itself (not at all pleasant for him, I’m sure). Hamish has now, in February this year, successfully come through a full reversal of this procedure.
He has also now been given the all clear from the hospital, which is a huge boost to all the family. I suppose it sometimes takes something like this to happen to make you actually sit up and re-assess your outlook on life. I know for certain that has happened now with Hamish and Pamela.
I am sure we have all, at one time or another, been affected in some way by cancer in one form or another.
I have thought long and hard about what I wanted to do. I feel a great deal of satisfaction that I am in a position where I am able to raise some money and hopefully raise awareness of bowel cancer in the UK, campaigning for best treatment and care and the provision of practical support and advice.
I have my own personal goal and aim to try and beat my own PB time @ 52 Min & 42 sec. Ideally I would like to crack the 50 Min mark (no pressure there then!!!!!!!).
Thankfully in Hamish’s case they got in early and sorted him out.
I would be grateful if you could please spare some time to make a donation. Any amount you can donate would be gratefully appreciated.
I thank you in anticipation.
Kind regards
James Kettle
