MIBREAST Study
All the money raised will support the MIBREAST study at The
Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which aims to support patients who require a
mastectomy as part of their cancer treatment plan.
The majority of women will opt for immediate breast
reconstruction, but it can be extremely hard to imagine their post-operative
appearance and to be able to make an informed decision between the
reconstructive options.
Currently, verbal description, drawings and a library of 2D
images are used to demonstrate the possible post-operative appearance but variation
in individual body shapes, breast shape and skin tone mean these methods won’t
necessarily represent a woman’s own unique outcome.
This study will allow patients to have their appearance
captured after surgery using a 3D-surface imaging system. These pictures can
then be edited to show how she might look after reconstructive surgery,
which will enable women to
make more confident decisions about mastectomy and reconstruction. Additionally,
this technology measures the shape of the breast which may help in surgical
planning, reducing the need for later adjustment operations to improve
symmetry.
To deliver this technology, the hospital will be using a
web-based system which will allow the images to be captured on an iPad using a
Structure Sensor (an infra-red attachment). This will make it much more mobile
and accessible and will have a huge benefit for patients who use the service.
