In 2013-2014, most of us met while participating in various legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Post-race, we found ourselves searching for a new challenge - what comes after sailing around the world? Thanks to a combination of innocence, masochism, and love for the sea we decided to take up endurance rowing.
As sailors, the majority of us have sailed the roughly 60 miles around the Isle of Wight at some point. Now we're going to row it on the 12th of May.
Hayley, despite not being crazy enough to do the Clipper race (yet!), is also jumping in the boat. The boat we'll be rowing on the big day is modeled on a Cornish
pilot gig. It's been adapted for open water rowing. There are 8 of us on
board as crew (all women) with six rowing at any time, one coxing, and one resting.
We rotate position every 45 minutes (have to even out the blisters!) and anticipate completing the row in
10 - 12 hours.
We're raising money for the RNLI as a cause close to our hearts. We have seen firsthand the full power of the sea and respect the men and women who can offer assistance in desperate times. Many of us have friends and family who have volunteered. In the very early days of the RNLI, rescue boats were rowed.
We'd love it if you could show your support for the RNLI and our rowing challenge by helping us raise money for a great cause.
