Story
Hello, my name is Ifrah. Thank you for visiting my page 😊
A little background:
Like most people I have 2 kidneys…but the difference is they aren’t my own 🙊
My own kidneys were removed back in 2001 when I went into acute renal failure at the age of 11.
Since then I’ve had 2 kidney transplants.
The first one was in 2003 which was donated by my amazing uncle. This was truly life changing, and I was able to live a normal life.
Unfortunately that eventually started to fail, and so I needed another transplant in 2020 - peak covid! This time my gem of a brother stepped up.
As part of my journey, I went through years of gruelling dialysis (both haemo and P.D), Fluid restrictions, diet restrictions, countless hospital visits, medications, operations…and so much more!
Despite this, I’m very aware of how incredibly lucky I am…to have people in my life that were willing to do such a selfless act, there’s truly nothing I could say to express my gratitude.
I hate to think how long I would be on dialysis if it weren’t for them…getting a match in ethnic minorities is particularly challenging. Tragically many pass away with other complications before they ever get a transplant.
Some facts:
• Around 1 in 10 people have CKD (Chronic kidney disease).
• CKD is known as the ‘silent killer’ - there will often be little to no symptoms until end stage.
• Diabetes and high blood pressure are the 2 leading causes - An Asian person who is diabetic is 10x more likely to suffer from kidney failure compared to a Caucasian.
•There is currently no cure, only treatment.
Kidney Research UK aims to change this.
Some of the things the charity do:
Raise awareness, Earlier diagnosis, New & Better treatments, Quality care & support, Advances to make transplants last longer and improve quality of life.
On our 2 year ‘kidneyversary,’ Adeel and I wanted to raise some money for a cause clearly close to our hearts.
On the 18th of September we will be doing a Zipline across the river Clyde!
We would really appreciate your support, thank you 😊
