Story
I have travelled extensively and love getting on a bike and exploring in a way that you just cant when in a car. I did a long distance cycle tour of N-Ireland when I was 15 and I recall my mother telling me then about a cycle holiday she did around Co Donegal at a similar age.
When the chance came up to cycle the Coast to Coast I jumped at the opportunity. I want to support the Alzheimer's Society because my mother Delphine Carson suffered with Alzheimers before her death in 2006. She had always been in good health, playing tennis well into her 60s. Seeing her mental and physical health deteriorate due to this terrible condition was very distressing. First her conversation became confused, then it stopped altogether. She had to be reminded of normal everyday actions like eating and drinking until she also stopped these.
Alzheimers is a relatively recently discovered illness (first identified during the 20th century) yet funding for research is very low. The Alzheimer's Society provides home, day and other support services for Alzheimers sufferers and their carers. They also fund research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of the condition. They have already funded over 100 research projects which have influenced care practice, improved the understanding of the condition and helped develop new therapies and tools for the treatment and diagnosis of Alzheimers.
I would like to raise what support I can to assist those who are working towards combating this debilitating condition.
£25 can mean 2 callers getting expert advice and support from the National Dementia Helpline.
£50 could pay for someone affected to go to weekly 3 hour dementia Cafe sessions for 1 month.
£100 could pay for a brain scan for a participant in a clinical trial to help improve diagnosis of Alzheimer's.
