Several times a year, we (Lucy, Susie and Algy) have helped our parents in some way or another, be it parking, making cakes and serving teas or general preparations when they open their garden for the National Garden Scheme. (The NGS or Yellow Book, as it is widely known). This is the most brilliant organisation because it raises huge amounts of money each year to distribute to many superb charities who rely on this income. The main recipients are Macmillan and Marie Curie, who each received £500,000 in 2019, whilst Carers Trust and Hospice UK shared just under £1M between them. Charities specialising in Parkinsons, mental health, hospital gardens and several others all benefit greatly too. Please see the NGS link for full information.
Covid19 has severely curtailed the NGS’s ability to raise funds through their Open Gardens this year, to huge detriment to these charities and the invaluable work they are able to do. Having had to cancel our own open garden this weekend, we have been thinking hard about what we might be able to do to help. Now, we would like to ask you please, to help us.
During lockdown, so many families have talked about how their own gardens have been their saviour. So, could we possibly ask every one of you who has enjoyed a garden during this time, whether your own, or a public park, or a balcony or even a green view which you’ve appreciated, to spend literally a few minutes to do 2 things:
* 1. To make a donation of £1 to my Just Giving page; Horkesley Hall for the National Garden Scheme. If you are feeling particularly generous, you might consider giving more, or even £1 for each day of lockdown, or £1 for each acre you’ve enjoyed (calling all those with large estates!). But if everyone gives at least £1, it would be amazing.
*2. To forward this letter on to one more person with a note urging them to support this effort.
We really would be so grateful for any support you can offer in this and very much hope that between us, we can really make a difference.
With very best wishes,
Lucy, Susie and Algy
