In a flurry of New Year's Resolutions on 1st January 2020 I put my name in the ballot for a place on the Great North Run, my first (and last!!!) half marathon. On the 11th February 2020, when I heard I'd got a place, I was in the small town of Serres in northern Greece visiting our daughter Lucy who was volunteering at the Serres Refugee Camp. Lifting Hands International provides humanitarian assistance to the camp. Having seen the amazing work they do there, in particular providing a safe space for Yazidi women and their families who have fled from Iraq and Syria, I decided there and then to run to raise money for Lifting Hands. I met some amazing women during my short stay - all of whom made me realise that we are all human beings and all have our own hopes and dreams. The money I raise will help to support families living in the Serres Refugee Camp - through paying for food parcels, and materials for the female-friendly space where I met so many inspiring women.
That was all 18 months ago now - the Great North Run didn't happen last year because of Covid, but running was one of the things that kept me going through all the lockdowns. My place was rolled over to the 2021 Great North Run - and now I am poised, with excitement and a lot of trepidation, to do a half marathon!
