Story
The Heritage Investments Team will be aiming to cycle 170 miles over 24 working hours across both our Christchurch and Wimborne offices for Macmillan Caring Locally from 10th October 2022.
Macmillan Caring Locally is a small local charity which supports the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital. The Macmillan Unit is a specialist palliative care ward built in 1974 and was the first of its kind in the country.
Although the charity has the Macmillan name, it is in fact an independent charity with no connection to the national organisation Macmillan Cancer Support.
In partnership with the NHS the charity supports 16 in-patient beds at the Macmillan Unit Christchurch, a 15 person Day Centre, 12 Specialist Palliative Care Sisters who look after up to 400 patients living at home in our local community, and 3 Specialist Palliative Care Sisters who support patients at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. Every year there are more than 1,500 referrals to the Macmillan Unit.
Macmillan Caring Locally also funds the multi-disciplinary teams at the Macmillan Unit which include the Family Support Team, Rehabilitation Team, Complementary Therapy, Welfare benefits advice and Chaplaincy. Macmillan Caring Locally is very proud that the Macmillan Unit is a ‘Centre of Excellence’; a standard achieved due to the dedication of their team of professionals and volunteers.
Referrals to the Macmillan Unit have tripled in the last ten years so the charity has been setting aside funds for a number of years to build a new Macmillan Unit to meet the changing needs of our community. The charity has launched a capital appeal called ‘Brick by Brick’ to raise the remaining funds to complete this project.M
