Hi!  My name is Helena Grimmer and for those of you who don’t know, I am a first year Combined Honours in Arts student at Durham University.  During summer 2014, I will be travelling with a group of 17 other Durham students to volunteer with two projects supporting deprived and vulnerable children in Peru.  I am raising money both to get myself out to Peru and also for the charities which support these projects, Globalteer and Kiya Survivors.

For three weeks I will be working at the Picaflor House Project which was established by the UK registered charity Globalteer in 2010. The project supports children from Oropesa and the surrounding areas, including those from particularly poor and often unstable families, children who have been orphaned and children who live on the street, by offering these children a safe environment in which to learn and play.

Kiya Survivors is a UK-Peruvian charity operating predominantly in Peru. They build and run educational centres for children who suffer from mental health problems or have special needs. They also help children who have suffered abuse or who have been abandoned as well as offering support to young and violated women.  I will be working at the Rainbow House and the Rainbow centre in Urubamba in the Cusco region which are dedicated to helping children who suffer from autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy and those with hearing/speech difficulties.

I really, really would be extremely grateful for any donation BIG or small, every little truly does help!!  Please also keep looking back at this page and on my Facebook and Twitter pages as I undertake a variety of weird and wonderful challenges throughout the year in order to raise money…most of which will be highly embarrassing for me and highly amusing to you all!  On that note, if there are any challenges you have a particular desire for me to take on, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.  No promises – sorry I will not be jumping out of any planes!!!
