Story

In February 2015 I will be travelling to Tanzania and attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness and money for the Hampshire & Isle Of Wight Air Ambulance.

I believe HIOWAA is a charity worth supporting because they are always ready and waiting to save someones life. You can't predict when you or one of your loved ones will get into an accident or a dangerous situation that might need their assistance. While working as a Solent Radar Controller I have seen just how much they are relied on and called out, and how professional and efficient they are to work with. As the organisation receives no government funding it is up to the public to raise the £4000 they need everyday to stay in action.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the hightest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa, reaching 19,341ft (5,895m). The trek will last six days, reaching Uhuru Peak - The Roof Of Africa on day five.

The climb will start at Machame Gate, walking up to Machame Hut then along the Machame ridge line to the Shira Plateau. The route then crosses the Shira Plateau to the base of the Baranco Wall. I will then go east up the Baranco Wall, through the Karanga Valley, to arrive at Barafu Hut. The last part of the climb starts at midnight on day five, reaching Stella Point at sunrise, then climbing the last ascent to Uhuru Peak.
