In November I visited Uganda as part of a volunteer dental team consisting of 4 dentists, 2 dental therapists, 1 hygienist and a dental nurse. We were joined by 3 Ugandan dentists and teams of translators - different dialects are spoken in the two areas we visited.

We spent 2 weeks providing pain relief in temporary clinics we set up in various villages around Kumi and Mbale in the south east, treating approx 2000 patients in 10 days.The clinics were often in church halls or school classrooms with triage or post-op outside under the nearest mango tree. The queue often stretched around the building when we arrived and on several days so many people arrived for treatment that we had to send some away.

Treatment usually meant extractions followed by painkillers and antibiotics, although many patients were also treated for sensitivity. Lack of electricity in these remote areas prevents more comprehensive treatment. All were given oral hygiene instruction.

In a part of the country where it is not unknown for patients to suffer toothache for years or to die from untreated dental abcesses, every little bit we do makes a difference.
