Story
Though many people live fulfilled lives with Alzheimer's Disease, others, like my Mum, are no longer able to live at home and experience debilitating confusion, frustration and depression, amplified by the fact that they aren't able to grasp or remember why this is happening to them. For the person affected, day to day living becomes hugely challenging; for relatives and loved ones, the sense of loss can feel overwhelming.
The number of people globally living with dementia is expected to rise from 50m in 2018 to 152m in 2050, an increase of over 200%. This is due in part to the fact that we are all living longer, but like most people, I want to do everything I can to make sure that that old age is a time to enjoy rather than fear. Alzheimer's Research UK has set itself the ambitious target of finding a life-changing treatment by 2025, which is a little too late for Gin Joan, as some of Mum's former colleagues affectionately called her, but gives hope to literally millions of others.
I'm walking 50k in a day to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK. Please donate if you can. Thank you.
