Hello all! 

My name's Hazel, I'm 22 and I'm raising money for VSO!

 

VSO sends qualified and experienced volunteers to places suffering from poverty, war and natural disaster, creating active solutions to serious worldwide problems. At the same time, VSO works towards a sense of cultural understanding across the world. 

I'm very excited to be given an amazing opportunity to work and live with people in Makeni, Sierra Leone as part of one of VSO's projects. Before I go however, I will be raising £800 for VSO!

 Please donate as much as you can! It all goes to a wonderful cause:

 

·      £5 will fund the training of local medical staff to help reduce mother to baby HIV transmission from 50% to 2%.

·      £10 pays for the training of local nurses to help reduce infant mortality by over 90%; £20 will provide a week of training.

·      £50 will pay for the skills development of a woman with HIV in Mozambique to enable her to start her own business.

·      £150 will help the poorest children in Nepal get an education, by paying for a VSO education advisor for one month.

In Sierra Leone, I will be working with young people living in poverty, suffering from HIV/AIDs, unable to access education or political rights. A lot of the focus of my work will be on young women who experience some of the worst aspects of poverty in Sierra Leone (They have, for example, A 50% chance of being sexually abused before turning 18, and are almost guaranteed to experience some kind of sexual violence in their lifetime). 

 

Fundraising activities:

I've just recently run 5KM dressed as Santa :) 

Having completed the run the Santa Dash in 40 minutes it's time to move on to our next challenge! 

I'm currently on the look out for somewhere to sell cakes, hot drinks, etc. I have arranged to sell a great deal of my books and have colllected bits and bobs from family members to sell. I will be doing bag packing at a local supermarket for donations, and am willing to do chores and babysitting for donations! I'm also planning a goodbye meal in January which will be super cheap, and will help towards my target.
