Story

The Cause

Motherhood is undoubtedly one of the most life-altering and fulfilling experiences in a woman's life, however for thousands of women in Afghanistan this special time is associated with poor health and extreme risk. Routine check-ups and essential medication are non-existent and minor complications during pregnancy can lead to death for both mother and child.

Afghanistan has one of the highest rates of maternal deaths in the world; the following facts will help you understand how urgently the mothers of Afghanistan and their babies need our help:

  • In Afghanistan, for women of reproductive age (between 15-49) the biggest risk to a woman's life is having a baby
  • In Afghanistan 66% of births are not attended by a skilled birth attendant
  • Over 87% of maternal deaths were considered preventable
  • 93% of all births are carried out at home rather than in clinics or hospitals
  • 50% of new born deaths occur at home but by having a skilled birth attendant present homebirths can reduce neonatal mortalities by 70%

How your sponsorship money will help

The sponsorship money you will raise whilst taking part in this challenge will go a long way in supporting our Motherkind Clinic in the Puleh Charki district of Afghanistan and will help reduce maternal mortality whilst promoting maternal health in Afghanistan. At Muslim Hands we believe that by working on two main areas such as training and recruiting skilled birth attendants and providing antenatal care, we will continue to make a significant impact.

Since 2011 the Motherkind Clinic has reached out to approximately 2,000 expectant mothers every month and with your help we can continue to provide:

  • Pre-natal and post-natal care and advice
  • Train and recruit skilled birth attendants
  • Ensure that medication and good hygiene practices are followed
  • Continue to provide an accessible and well-equipped maternal hospital
