Story

Gary and I as team 'Harry's Rainbow Walkers', have decided to support TWO worthwhile charities in 2022, with our focus on increasing awareness of the work Harry's Rainbow Charitable Trust does in the Buckinghamshire area, together with supporting the amazing work the SJP Charitable Foundation do in supporting many children's charities across the UK every year.

As a team we are doing 2 Threshold Series events in June/July 2022 in aid of Harrys Rainbows, the link to their page, and more detail of why the charity was formed in Harry's memory and also on how they support families is here, though in summary...

They support children and young people in the Milton Keynes and surrounding areas, who have been bereaved of a parent or sibling. As well as providing information and guidance on their website and
social networking sites, they also provide various bereavement support services, including regular support groups, activities and trips, and individual tailored support, as appropriate.

They have helped over 200 families around Milton Keynes and
surrounding areas, and are celebrating their 10th Anniversary this
year.

Why 2 Ultra Marathon events just weeks apart???

  • For Paul, he wants to support Harry's Rainbows because he lost his brother 19 years ago (27/11/2002) in a car accident, and whilst an adult at the time, appreciates the support the charity gives to bereaved families, and having heard 1st hand how the charity has helped local families, and how significant the support was for the children (and parents), would like to support them, so they can continue this much needed work for years to come.  Its also the 20th anniversary of his brother’s death in 2022, and having raised funds to support disadvantaged/disabled children/charities in North Yorkshire previously, believes its fitting that he does something significant to mark the 20th anniversary in his memory.

  • For Gary, he remembers back to shortly after his son Leo was born, and Leo benefitting from some of the work the charity has done, as some of the awareness, and medical practice changes implemented due to Harry’s death, helping his baby son, avoiding more severe implications when he fell unwell.  Gary is well aware of what the consequences could have been, and remembers fondly, the support the charity gave at the time, forcing the local hospitals treatment processes.
  • The project we are supporting .... The charity has a retreat(caravan) at Camber sands that they use for grieving families, for time away to give them some respite, but the caravan has no outside space, decking etc, and could do with a refresh of toys and games for the families to use,  This is the project we are looking to support. We aim to raise £10,000 pounds for this, £2,500 of which we have received from the ST. James's Place Charitable Foundation as a grant, so our target is to raise a further £7,500 as a minimum.

The events we are doing are:-

Race to the King which is held on the 11-12th June.  We will be doing the 100km non stop event, walking, and aiming for a time we hope of 18 hours or thereabouts.  This is an Ultra steeped in history, starting and finishing at the iconic Goodwood Racecourse, with two equal, but very different loops in the South of England with a variety of terrain and stunning landscapes that will challenge and inspire in equal measure!

Race to the Stones which is held on the 9-10 July 2022.  We will be doing the 100km non stop event, walking, and aiming for a time we hope of 18 hours or thereabouts. Setting off from Lewknor in Oxfordshire, the route ventures into the North Wessex Downs wandering through golden corn, vast fields and stunning countryside as far as the eye can see, taking in the Uffington White Horse, Liddington Castle, finishing at Avebury Circle.

By organising our fundraising in this way

100% of the money raised on this page will be forwarded to Harry's Rainbow Charitable Trust. Whatever we raise through this page, St. James's Place Wealth Management will make a matched donation to the charitable foundation for distribution to a range of children's charities. As such a £25 donation becomes £31.25 for Harry's Rainbow with Gift Aid added, plus a further £31.25 matched funding to the SJP Charitable Foundation to support other children's charities, making a total of £62.50 raised.

Peoples generosity never ceases to amaze and astound us, irrespective of what's happening in our lives, and in the worlds economy.  The three of us will remember EVERY £1 given in support when our feet start to blister, tiredness kicks in, it's dark and there's still hours of walking to do.
