Story

Thankyou for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Harry Walmsley, my brother Jimmy Walmsley who is 22 years old, was involved in a fatal car accident on 24th May 2012, killing his best friend Fray. Jimmy suffered horrific injuries including broken plelvis, broken chest bone, punctured lung but worst of all, he suffered severe brain damage with an injury called 'Diffused Axonal Injury' (DAI for short) of which 90% of people never recover from and the 10% that do, dont usually have any quality of life whatsoever. The doctors at the Walton Centre did not think Jimmy was going to make it through the first few days and then he took a turn for the worse and had to have a life saving operation to stop his brain from swelling. It was touch and go for so many months later whilst he lay in a coma. He eventually came around after 4 months and every single day, he made a slight improvement.

He was in hospital for 8 months and is now at home with us but goes to hospital re-habilitation every day. He is getting stronger now, learning to do a lot more but, he can talk, he can recognise us, he can remember things from his past and he is happy, smiling all the time. He has the brain of a 10 year old child now, but the doctors say, the brain takes two years to fully recover and whatever we have at that time is probably the way he will stay, so he is already doing a lot more than we could have ever wished for.

The Walton Centre and their amazing Doctors and Nurses saved his life, they are an amazing team of people that we can never thank enough. My page is to raise money for them, for the family room that we stayed in for so many weeks and slept in chairs that were uncomfortable, watched a TV that had a screen so small you could hardly see it, I want to raise money to give families a better place when they are going through the most traumatic times of their lives.

Jimmy was filmed as a part of a Channel 5 documentary which is aired on Channel 5 on 19th February 2013 at 10pm. It shows his life saving operation by the amazing doctors and gives a little bit of Jimmys story and the whole trauma that the family and friends experienced.

I am running the Liverpool half marathon to raise money but all donations will be much appreciated. I will continue to raise money in future doing different events but to begin with, I have set a realistic goal that with your help, I know we can acheive.
