Story

I want to thank anyone taking the time to read this so much, either for donating or just taking the time to read my mum's story and educating themselves on how vile Pancreatic Cancer can be.

On Thursday 30th April 2020 I climbed the height of Kilimanjaro using my staircase! I climbed up and down my 13 steps 2268 times!!! It took 13 hours and 15 minutes to complete over 4 days. Sections of my livestream/ radio appearances appear on my Facebook and Instagram (hannahmyatt96).

I will be climbing the World's Tallest Freestanding Mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Not only for my amazing mother but also for everyone who has been directly or indirectly affected by Pancreatic Cancer. My mum was the most inspiring, amazing woman you will ever meet. She was the best mum to 5 children and the best nanny to 4 grandchildren. Not only has she dedicated her life to looking after us all but she's also spent over 10 years of her life looking after others as a PCSO.

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of all the common cancers with the average diagnoses being only 2 to 6 months. 1 in 4 diagnosed won't survive a month, 3 in 4 won't survive a year. It has the worst survival rates and to make it even worse it is super hard to diagnose.

Please take your time to read my mum's AMAZING story:

My mum was first diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in October 2013 after multiple visits to the GP due to indigestion, severe weight loss and eventually turning yellow from Jaundice. After a MRI scan they noticed a tumour (she called it Trevor) blocking her bile duct. She was admitted into hospital where they tried to fit a stent to drain the bile, however this caused a complication of Pancreatitis and an internal bleeding.

By November she was having life saving surgery called a Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple Procedure), where they removed part of the pancreas, part of the small intestine (duodenum), the gallbladder and the bile duct. This is where they noticed the cancer was actually in her Pancreas and had spread to her bile duct. This was successful and she was finally allowed out of hospital in December, 3 months after originally being admitted. This was then followed by 6 months of Chemotherapy (GemCap) which resulted in both Liver Sepsis and Pneumonia.

The first reoccurance was unexpectedly found in November 2017, 4 years later, during one of her routine scans. The cancer had spread to both of her lungs and potentially her liver. This was treated with the brutal Chemotherapy Folfirnox until June 2018, where it was cut short due the multiple complications and the risk to my mum's life. During the treatment my mum overcame two bouts of Neutropenic Sepsis and was admitted to hospital after almost all of her sessions. This treatment also caused her to lose all of her hair.

The second reoccurance was in March 2019 where one of her lung tumours had returned and another small tumour had grown in her other lung. This was treated with SABR radiotherapy specifically targeting the larger tumour. This has left her with significant scarring on her lungs.

The third reoccurance was in October 2019 when my mum was experiencing a loss of balance and constant headaches so took her concerns back to the GP. After another scan it was found that the cancer had spread to her brain. Very shortly after, this was treated with SRS Radiotherapy however due to this she is no longer allowed to drive.

September 2020 my mum has another round of Radiotherapy to try and tackle one of the tumours in her brain. It has been found that Trevor's friend in her brain also has a 2nd friend.

In 2021 the cancer has spread to her brain, lungs and other organs and even though she stayed strong and battled every singe day and showed strength no normal person could she unfortunately lost her battle on the 28th of August 2021.

Mum you inspired us and made us proud every single day. You never did let the disease beat you and if I grow up to be half the woman you are then I will be so happy. Miss you every single day.

Thanks SO much for taking the time to read all of this. Now lets hope Covid stops ruining my plans, I can get my butt up this mountain and raise awareness and money so that Pancreatic Cancer can be diagnosed earlier, new treatments can be researched and support can be offered to more people!

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.
