Story

From diagnosis to treatment and everything between and beyond, communication is so important for those who suffer the effects of cancer.

Some people don't have the support of family and friends for the days they just want to feel 'normal' and escape the realities of cancer. Even for those who do have an immediate support network, some days, there is simply no escape from having to face the disease head on.

The amount of information given in medical appointments can be so overwhelming. Then there are the questions your GP can't answer. The things to decide and plan if the worst were to happen. The difficult conversations that you'd rather not have with your loved ones.

Before my Dad's death, Macmillan's understanding nurses supported him when he needed impartiality; helping him to see financial and practical matters clearer. To find this kind of unlimited support, without affecting a friend or family member, really is so unique.

Alongside nurse meetings, my Dad had the brilliant opportunity to use Macmillan's online forums to talk openly and anonymously to others going through similar difficulties - he was able to access this at any time that his mind was running riot.

After my Dad's death, Macmillan supported me. Though I couldn't bring myself to share my own difficulties, using Macmillan's online forums to read other people's shared stories helped me to cope, compare and rationalise my own experiences during the worst time of my life.

Since 1906, the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity have provided practical, medical, financial and emotional support to those going through cancer. 'Macmillan' is a word used synonymously when cancer is mentioned and, for so many, it's the go-to organisation for information and support beyond hospital and family.

On Saturday 3rd June, My lovely friend Alex and I will be participating in Macmillan's Loch Lomond Mighty Hike - a 26 mile (marathon!) walk from Drymen to Tarbet, in one day.

Please donate what you can to help me to achieve my minimum sponsorship of £250 so Macmillan Cancer Support can continue to provide such fantastic and important support to families like ours.
