Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

With a population of over 7 million people, but only 5 optometrists, the people of Sierra Leone are in desperate need of skilled eyecare to provide them with glasses and reduce the numbers of people with preventable blindness.

Having poor eyesight means that people can’t educate themselves or get a job, so they are destined to remain poor for the rest of their lives. Many people in Sierra Leone simply need a pair of glasses to allow them to see well enough to get a job, which pays for them and their families to rise out of poverty.

For many others, they are losing their eyesight to blinding eye diseases, much of which would be totally avoidable if they were able to receive eyecare to detect their eye disease soon enough.

At Hall & Co Eyewear we want to change all this. By supporting young eyecare workers we can make a real difference to the situation.

Meet Lansana

“My name is Lansana Lahun (pictured above). I was born on 23 November 1992 in Eastern Province, Sierra Leone, West Africa.

At 17, I had to leave home and come to Kailahun to live with my aunt to attend school. I was the first person in my family to progress to secondary school.

During this time life became tougher for me, as my mother, my only source of support, had difficulties paying for my education. So every weekend I had to go home to my village and assist my mother with farm work to help raise the money. My educational performance became very affected as I barely had enough time with my books. However, I worked hard and gained my university requirement qualification.

I live amongst some of the poorest people in the world, but also the most in need of eye tests and glasses. You see, having poor eyesight means that you can’t educate yourself or get a job, so you are destined to remain poor for the rest of your life.

And unless I reach these people, they will not receive the glasses they so desperately need to give them the chance to escape their poverty. Even worse, they may even lose their eyesight from eye diseases that go undetected.

Just imagine the difference I could make to people with poor eyesight living in poverty!

Hall & Co Eyewear are raising money for Vision Action to make this happen.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for any amount you can give. Every single penny you donate will go directly to my education and work.

I will work hard every day to change the lives of my people on your behalf, and that’s my promise to you. I will also send regular reports of what I am doing and how that is changing the lives of many people.

Thank you to all the supporters of Hall & Co Eyewear. Together we are helping the world to see.”

How you can help

We hope that Lans is just one of many young eyecare workers that we can support over the coming years.

He is so dedicated to bringing eyecare to his people and we would invite you to join us by making a donation towards changing people’s lives forever.

Will you join us?

We welcome every single donation, no matter how much.

If you are able, you can become a regular donor and give a regular amount every month. This really helps us to budget for the support and training of Lans and his eyecare colleagues. Please contact jonathan@hallandcoeyewear.com or phone us on 028 9070 5787 if this is something you would like to do.

Thank you for your support. Together we are making other people’s lives better.
