Great North Run 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·

The brain is the most complex organ in our body. It controls our emotions, senses and actions. So when it breaks down, we break down. We fund the best research to discover the causes, develop new treatments and improve the lives of those affected. Let’s unite to accelerate progress. Today.

Story

My Dad has always been my hero.

Growing up with him as a professional footballer is every son’s dream and I got to live that with my Dad playing for Middlesbrough, Southend United, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Preston North End and Blackpool.

However, in 2010 while coaching the Youth Team at Blackpool FC, my Dad sadly suffered a brain stem stroke and as a result, now suffers from locked-in syndrome.

That is a condition of almost paralysis apart from eye movements, which means he requires around the clock care at our home in Bolton and the use of a wheelchair.

The last year or two has been difficult for all of us, but particularly so for my Dad, who is medically one of the most vulnerable people in his area.

The key to improving his condition is through research which is why I’m running the 2021 Great North Run for Brain Research UK and the Gary Parkinson Trust.

Your support in helping me to raise at least £300, would really help to spur me on across the 13-and-a-bit miles across Newcastle this September.
