I recently shaved my head as a fundraising event in aid of The Irish Cancer Society. Please help me to raise cash to make a real difference in the fight against cancer. I don’t care if you donate a fiver or five hundred, just donate something. Right now.
The Scalping took place in Chapelizod Village, Dublin 20
Friday 6th May 2016 – 6.30pm
The Short & Sweet info:
I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and while I am undergoing treatment with the amazing staff at St. James’s Hospital, I’ve decided to use this experience in a positive (and distracting) way with some well-needed fundraising for The Irish Cancer Society. We are all touched by cancer in some way, both of my parents who are in their 70’s were recently diagnosed and have been lucky enough to survive both prostate and breast cancer, they are still going strong. I plan to do the same! Breast cancer is currently the second most common cancer in women in Ireland affecting about 3,000 women and 20 men each year and The Irish Cancer Society relies entirely on voluntary contributions from the public to fund its programmes on patient care, education and research so it is especially important to me to do my bit to support their hard work.
Specialist Cars Ireland.com have very kindly offered the following (and thrilling) incentive to donate:
*Highest Donation: 10 X Laps in professionally driven Race Car at Mondello Park
*All Donations are entered into a draw for: 5 X Laps in professionally driven Race Car at Mondello Park
The Long & Tangled Girly info:
Coping with an unexpected diagnosis of cancer can be very stressful at times, seemingly healthy, non smoker, not overweight, fit(-ish), shock horror, why me???? It can be difficult to come to terms with the emotions involved but with it comes a sense of gratitude and it has also made me realize where my strength lies and what is most important in life to me. But the most surprising part to me is how much I dread the hair loss part, I really didn’t think it would affect me so much, who knew I was so vain? I’ve had a life long love hate relationship with my hair, I wanted blond poker straight fine hair, I was born with wavy dark thick hair. It was dyed, bleached, crimped, straightened, bound, dreaded, hacked and abused for decades but it never let me down, it stayed strong and shiny no matter how I badly I treated it. My mum said it was my ‘crowning glory’ as I begged her to brush it for hours, I still do. I can’t explain how sad and scary it is to say goodbye to it now in my 40’s but hopefully this time next year it will be back in some form or other, perhaps even blond poker straight hair next time……. In the meantime, bring on the wigs!
I would also like to thank my family and friends for their support, I always knew they were pretty great but I didn’t realize just quite how amazing they were until now. Sappy I know but I love you all!
