Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Sometime around 28th August 2016 I will be attempting a solo swim across the English Channel. The slot has been booked with my pilot boat, Connemara for almost 2 years now and all the endurance swims I have done during that time have been with this in mind . The shortest distance across the channel is 21 miles in a straight line although I won't be swimming in a straight line, more of an "S" shape as the ebb and flow tides drag me east then west for 6 hours at a time.
I experienced 1st hand what this stretch of water has in store for me when I crewed for a friend last year during his crossing. Had I done that before I paid the deposit on my own slot I might well have decided against it!
Cold water, jellyfish , unpredictable sea conditions and the odd passing container ship await me on this journey which will take me between 11 and 14 hours if the conditions stay favourable.
The rules set out by the channel swimming association are quite simple. Wear one standard swimming costume ( no wetsuit) one swimming cap and a pair of goggles. Start on dry land in England and clear the water onto dry land in France without touching the boat or anyone else in between.
I am asking for donations to Bright Red charity, who provide support to people with blood cancer.
I am funding the costs of the swim personally, so all money collected will go to Bright Red.
