My personal reason for doing it - apart from combatting the challenge of being really scared of heights - is in memory of my mother, who had a major stroke, which she survived for a further 64 months, with almost no quality of life. The Stroke Association gives so much support to stroke survivors, families & carers. And the day of the abseil is my mother's birthday.
